Swiss currency
Swiss Franc: facts and figures
- The Swiss Franc is the official currency in Switzerland and is also used in Liechtenstein
- The currency code for the Swiss Franc is CHF, which is also used as its currency symbol
- Swiss Franc notes come in six denominations: CHF 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1,000
- 1 Swiss Franc = 100 Centimes and there are seven coins: 5, 10, 20, 50 Centimes; plus 1, 2, 5 Francs ^
- The name 'Franc' comes from the Latin words 'Francorum Rex' (King of Franks) and the currency code stands for 'Confoederatio Helvetica Franc'
- Prices in Switzerland are almost always listed in Euros as well as Francs, to help tourists, and some shops even accept Euros
^ Please note we don't buy or sell foreign currency coins.
Using your bank card in Switzerland
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants all over Switzerland, with Visa and Mastercard being the most commonly used networks. It’s still a good idea to carry a little bit of backup cash though.
Switzerland is a global financial centre so banks and ATMs are everywhere in towns and cities. Even smaller places are likely to have at least one ATM, and some will let you withdraw Euros as well as Swiss Francs.
You may be charged a fee by the ATM provider as well as your UK bank when using a cash point abroad. Always opt to pay for a transaction or withdrawal in the local currency, if given the choice. ATM providers often mark-up the exchange rate for payments in a foreign currency.
